Hello Spring: Freshening Your Home (and a Little Surprise)

Hello Spring: Freshening Your Home (and a Little Surprise)

|Amy Sommerville

Can you feel it? That shift. The mornings are lighter, the windows are open a crack longer, and suddenly your cosy winter scents feel… a bit much.

I love a heavy, warm scent as much as anyone — probably more, honestly — but there's a moment every March where I walk into the kitchen, catch whatever I've had burning, and think: right, it's time.

So if you've been clinging to your winter favourites (no judgement, I do it every year), consider this your gentle nudge. Spring's here. Let's freshen things up.

The Spring Swap

You don't need to overhaul your whole collection. Honestly, it's more like a rotation — keeping what still works and bringing in a few scents that match the mood shift. Lighter. Brighter. A bit more alive.

Here's what I've been reaching for lately:

Uplifting is the one I put on first thing in the morning now the clocks are about to change. It's pure essential oils — lemon, lemongrass, geranium, and litsea cubeba (also called May Chang, which sounds much more glamorous). It's pure sunshine in a clamshell. Nothing complicated, nothing heavy. Just bright, cheerful, and genuinely mood-lifting. If spring had a scent, this would be it.

Earl Grey & Cucumber is one of those scents people don't expect to love, and then they really love. It opens with crisp apple and bergamot, settles into cool cucumber, and finishes with creamy vanilla and cedarwood. It's like afternoon tea in a spa. Sophisticated without trying too hard — and it works just as beautifully in March as it does in July because it's so well balanced.

Strawberry & Lily is the one for anyone who wants their home to smell like clean sheets and a summer garden at the same time. Ripe strawberry and pink lily up front, soft florals and clean cotton through the middle, and the gentlest white musk underneath. It's gorgeous in bedrooms. That fresh laundry feeling with a lovely fruity twist — spring in a nutshell.

The Ones That Bridge the Gap

Not everything needs to be light and citrusy. Some of us (me) need a gentle transition rather than going full spring overnight.

Winter Honeysuckle & Elderflower is perfect for that in-between. The name says winter but don't let that fool you — it's actually a gorgeous bridge scent. Mandarin and winter berries open into frosted honeysuckle, jasmine, and elderflower, with sandalwood and vanilla warming the base. It's delicate and luminous without being heavy. Think of it as late winter meeting early spring — crisp enough for the lighter evenings, warm enough for the chilly mornings.

Restore is one for the evenings. It's another pure essential oil blend — orange, bergamot, cypress, ylang ylang, cedarwood, and patchouli, with aniseed as the signature note. I'll be honest: the aniseed divides people. You either love it immediately or you take a moment. But the ones who love it? They come back for it every time. It's warm, woody, grounding — the kind of scent that says "the day's done, you can stop now."

A Couple of Bits of News

Right, I've been bursting to tell you this.

You know the essential oil discovery set? The one with three little Wax Pops so you could try the essential oil range without committing to a full clamshell? It's been really popular — like, really popular. So popular that I've decided to release all of the essential oils as individual Wax Pops as part of the spring collection. Every single one. They won't be available for a couple of weeks yet, but they're coming.

If you've been curious about Uplifting or Restore but weren't sure about going straight to a full-size clamshell, this is your moment.

Become an Official Sniffer

OK, this is the bit I'm really excited about.

I'm launching something new for the Wax Pop Family — our mailing list lot, the ones who've been here through the ups and downs (and the nine months of radio silence, bless you).

I'm looking for Official Sniffers.

What does that mean? For each new scent I'm developing, I'll be picking a small handful of Wax Pop Family members to receive a test Wax Pop before it goes anywhere near the website. You'll get to sniff it, live with it, form an opinion — and then fill out a short survey telling me what you honestly think. What you love, what you're not sure about, what you'd change. In return, you'll get a discount off your next order as a thank you.

I'll be choosing different sniffers for different scents, so it's not the same people every time — but here's the thing: the more feedback you give, the more likely you are to be picked again. Think of it as a reward for being honest with me.

Early access to scents no one else has tried. A genuine say in what makes it to the shop. And a discount to spend however you like.

The catch? You need to be part of the Wax Pop Family to even be in the running. If you're already on the mailing list, keep an eye on your inbox — the first round of Official Sniffer picks will be going out soon, starting with the spring collection. If you're not on the list yet, now's a very good time to join. I won't spam you. I'll just occasionally send you lovely things and, apparently, free wax melts to sniff.

The Honest Bit

I always think the hardest part of a seasonal swap is letting go of a scent you've loved all winter. So here's my advice: don't. Keep your favourites. Just add a couple of new ones into the rotation and see how it feels. There are no rules — if you want to burn Wood Smoke & Vanilla in July, you absolutely can. I probably will.

But if your home's feeling a bit stale and you can't quite put your finger on why — it might just be time for a fresh scent. Start with one. See where it takes you.

Happy spring, lovely ones.
