Let's talk about maximising your melt experience
You've invested in beautiful, hand-poured wax melts, and I want to make sure you're getting every single hour of gorgeous fragrance from them. With proper care, each Wax Pop clamshell can give you approximately 88 hours of burn time – that's weeks of continuous enjoyment!
Here's everything I've learned about caring for your wax melts to get the best possible experience.
Storage matters more than you think
Before you even use your wax melts, how you store them makes a real difference to their longevity and fragrance strength.
Keep them cool and dry: Store your unopened clamshells away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A cupboard or drawer works perfectly. Heat can cause the fragrance oils to evaporate before you've even used them!
Stay sealed: Keep melts in their original packaging until you're ready to use them. Our compostable wrappers aren't just eco-friendly – they also protect the fragrance.
Mind the temperature: Extreme temperature changes can affect the wax texture. Room temperature storage is ideal – not in a cold garage or hot conservatory.
Using your wax melts the right way
How much to use: Start with 1 or half a wax pop and adjust based on your room size and how strong you like your fragrance. Larger spaces such as an open-plan office might need a couple of burners, but less is more, and it's important to start small as the pops pack a punch.
Burner placement: Position your burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts. Drafts can blow the fragrance away before you get to enjoy it properly! Also keep it away from curtains and out of reach of children and pets.
Optimal melting time: I recommend melting for 3-4 hours at a time. This gives you beautiful fragrance throw without exhausting the scent too quickly. Some people prefer to melt all day, which is absolutely fine – just know your fragrance might not last quite as many sessions.
Tea Light Selection: It's important that you don't use a tealight which will burn for more than 4 hours, as this can cause the oil to get too hot and damage the burner. Check the manufacturer's guidelines for your burner.
Switching scents without the mix-up
This is one of the questions I get asked most: how do I change fragrances without mixing them?
Let your wax cool completely and harden. Light a tealight and let it burn for a minute or so, just long enough for the hardened melt to slip out of the burner. Then simply throw it away and start with your next melt. Easy!
Never pour liquid wax down your sink – it will solidify and cause plumbing issues. Instead, let it cool and dispose of it in your general waste.
Recognising when your wax is done
You'll know it's time for a fresh melt when:
The fragrance becomes noticeably weaker even when freshly melted
You've had about 2-3 melting sessions from your pops
Some people try to squeeze extra life by adding more fragrance oil to old wax – I don't recommend this. The wax structure has already released its fragrance, and adding more oil won't bind properly. You're better off starting fresh with a new melt that's been perfectly formulated!
Cleaning your burner
A clean burner = better fragrance throw. Residue from previous scents can mute new fragrances.
Once you've removed the old wax, wipe the dish with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. For stubborn residue, when your burner is cold, a little rubbing alcohol on kitchen roll works beautifully. Make sure it's completely dry before adding new melts.
Troubleshooting common issues
"I can't smell anything!" This is usually scent fatigue – your nose has adapted to the fragrance. Try switching to a completely different scent family (floral to woody, for example) to reset your senses. Also check your burner placement and room ventilation.
"My wax looks sweaty or has white spots" This is called "frosting" or "sweating" and it's completely normal with natural soy wax, especially in temperature changes. It doesn't affect performance at all – just cosmetic!
"The color has faded" Direct sunlight can fade the beautiful colors in your melts. It doesn't affect the fragrance, but for best presentation, keep them out of sunny spots.
Getting your money's worth
With proper care, your Wax Pop clamshells truly do deliver those 88 hours of fragrance. That's incredible value – roughly the same cost per hour as a cup of coffee, but the enjoyment lasts for weeks!
Treat your melts well, and they'll reward you with consistent, beautiful fragrance every single time.
